**Cham Island** (Cu Lao Cham) is a beautiful archipelago of eight small islands lying about 15 km off the coast of Hoi An. Known for its pristine nature, clear water and rich history, it was designated a **UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009**, and strict environmental rules help keep it unspoilt. It makes a perfect day trip or overnight escape from the crowds. Here's what to do and see on Cham Island.

## A little history

Cham Island has a history stretching back thousands of years and was once an important stop on the trading routes of the ancient **Champa** kingdom, drawing merchants from China, Japan and across Southeast Asia. Today you can still visit historical sites such as the **Cham Island Marine Museum**, the ancient **Gieng Xom Cam well** and the **Hai Tang Pagoda**, built in 1758.

## Things to do on Cham Island

The island is all about nature and slow travel:

- **Snorkelling & diving** – the coral reefs around Cham Island are among the best near Hoi An, full of colourful marine life.
- **Beaches** – relax on **Bai Chong** and **Bai Ong**, two of the island's prettiest stretches of sand.
- **Fishing villages** – visit **Bai Lang** and **Bai Huong** for fresh seafood and a taste of local island life.
- **Trekking** – walk the forested hills to hidden pagodas and viewpoints.
- **Bird watching** – the protected forest is home to rare bird species and swiftlet nests.

## How to get to Cham Island

The quickest way is by **speedboat from Hoi An or Da Nang**, taking around 20–30 minutes. A slower public **ferry** also runs (about 90 minutes) for a more scenic, local ride. Trips are weather-dependent, so mornings and calm days are best.

## Getting around the island

Cham Island is small. You can **rent a motorbike** (roughly 100,000–150,000 VND/day) to reach the further beaches and villages, or simply explore the main village and nearby coves **on foot**.

## Best time to visit

The best months are **March to September**, when the sea is calm and clear – ideal for diving and snorkelling. Outside this window the water can be rough and boat services are often suspended.

## Where to stay

As a protected biosphere, the island has limited accommodation. Options include simple **homestays** (the best way to experience local life), a few small **eco-lodges**, or you can stay in [Hoi An](https://www.vietnamck.cz/en/pages/places/hoi-an-city) and visit on a day trip.

## Practical travel tips

- **Bring essentials** – shops are scarce, so pack sunscreen, water and anything you'll need for the day.
- **Respect the rules** – Cham Island bans single-use plastic bags to protect its ecosystem.
- **Book ahead** – if you plan to stay overnight, reserve early, as capacity is very limited.

## Why visit Cham Island?

Cham Island offers a rare mix of nature, history and quiet beaches within easy reach of Hoi An – perfect for travellers who want to escape the crowds. It pairs beautifully with a diving trip: see our [diving and sightseeing tour](https://www.vietnamck.cz/en/package/daily-tour/diving-and-sightseeing-in-vietnam), or have the island built into a tailor-made route.
