Ninh Binh is a masterpiece of nature and history, located just 90 kilometers south of Hanoi. Characterized by towering limestone karsts, emerald rice paddies, and winding rivers, it offers a dramatic landscape that feels like a scene from a movie (literally – parts of Kong: Skull Island were filmed here). As the first capital of independent Vietnam, it is a place where nature and heritage are inseparable. To truly escape the day-trip crowds from Hanoi, we recommend staying overnight and booking a private tour with us to discover the hidden corners of this province.
Trang An is the highlight of Ninh Binh. It is a stunning complex of limestone peaks and submerged caves. The only way to see it is by a traditional sampan boat, rowed by local experts (often using their feet!).
The Experience: You can choose between three different boat routes. Route 2 and 3 are the most popular as they take you through mysterious caves and to the film set of Kong: Skull Island.
Why Private? The boat docks get extremely busy with large tour groups. Our private excursions are timed perfectly—either early morning or late afternoon—to ensure you have the river almost to yourself, allowing for better photos and a peaceful atmosphere.
Tam Coc is often compared to Trang An, but it has its own unique charm. The Ngo Dong River winds through golden rice fields (at their best in May and June) and under three natural limestone caves.
Bich Dong Pagoda: Located near Tam Coc, this is one of the most beautiful "cave pagodas" in Vietnam. It consists of three tiers built into the mountainside. It’s an essential stop for anyone seeking the spiritual side of Ninh Binh.
Thai Vi Temple: A peaceful temple dedicated to the Tran Dynasty, located deep in the valley. It’s much quieter than the main attractions and perfect for those who value authenticity.
If you want the "hero shot" of your Vietnam trip, you have to climb the 500 stone steps of Mua Cave. At the summit, you are rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Tam Coc valley and the limestone mountains stretching to the horizon.
The Dragon Statue: A giant stone dragon guards the peak. It is a symbol of power and prosperity.
Pro Tip: The climb is steep and can be exhausting in the heat. We always suggest our clients do this climb at sunrise or sunset to avoid the midday sun and the heavy crowds.
Before Hanoi (Thang Long) became the capital, Hoa Lu was the political heart of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries. Today, you can visit the temples dedicated to Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang and Emperor Le Dai Hanh.
The architecture is humble but deeply significant. Walking through these ancient grounds provides a sense of the resilience and history of the Vietnamese people.
For those who appreciate scale, Bai Dinh is the largest Buddhist complex in Southeast Asia. It holds numerous records, including the largest gold-plated bronze Buddha statue and the longest corridor of Arhat statues.
It’s a massive area, so we often arrange electric cars for our guests to navigate between the different pagodas and towers comfortably.
For nature lovers, a private day trip to Cuc Phuong (Vietnam’s first national park) is a must. It is home to the Endangered Primate Rescue Center and the Turtle Conservation Center.
The Ancient Tree: A trek to the 1,000-year-old tree is a great way to experience the dense tropical jungle. In April and May, the forest is filled with thousands of white butterflies, creating a magical atmosphere.
If you find Trang An or Tam Coc too "touristy," Van Long is the answer. It is the largest wetland reserve in Northern Vietnam.
It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise and the best place to spot the critically endangered Delacour's Langur (a species of monkey) in the wild. The water is so still it acts like a mirror, reflecting the mountains perfectly.
Harvest Season (Late May - Early June): This is when the rice fields in Tam Coc turn brilliant gold. It is the most beautiful time for photography.
Spring (February - April): The weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for festivals and temple visits, though it can be a bit misty.
Avoid: Heavy rain months (September - October), which can lead to flooding in some cave areas.
Most visitors come from Hanoi. While there are many "cheap" bus tours, they often spend 5-6 hours in transit, leaving you very little time to actually see the sights.
Our Private Car Service: We provide comfortable, air-conditioned transfers from Hanoi or directly from the airport. This allows you to stop at hidden viewpoints along the way that big buses can't reach.
Airport Fast Track: If you are flying into Hanoi (Noi Bai) to start your trip to Ninh Binh, don't waste time in the legendary immigration lines. Use our Fast Track service to get through the airport in minutes so you can be on your way to the mountains while others are still standing in the terminal.
Just like we mentioned with Phu Quoc, parts of Ninh Binh are becoming very popular. However, unlike the "artificial" theme parks, Ninh Binh’s beauty is entirely natural and historical. The key to a successful trip here is timing and local knowledge.
Don’t just follow the crowds to the busiest boat docks at noon. Let us show you the quiet pagodas, the hidden valleys, and the best local places to try Com Chay (burnt rice) and local goat meat dishes—the specialties of the region.
