Cham Island (Cu Lao Cham) is a beautiful archipelago of eight small islands lying about 15 km off the coast of Hoi An. Known for its pristine nature, clear water and rich history, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009, and strict environmental rules help keep it unspoilt. It makes a perfect day trip or overnight escape from the crowds. Here's what to do and see on Cham Island.
Cham Island has a history stretching back thousands of years and was once an important stop on the trading routes of the ancient Champa kingdom, drawing merchants from China, Japan and across Southeast Asia. Today you can still visit historical sites such as the Cham Island Marine Museum, the ancient Gieng Xom Cam well and the Hai Tang Pagoda, built in 1758.
The island is all about nature and slow travel:
The quickest way is by speedboat from Hoi An or Da Nang, taking around 20–30 minutes. A slower public ferry also runs (about 90 minutes) for a more scenic, local ride. Trips are weather-dependent, so mornings and calm days are best.
Cham Island is small. You can rent a motorbike (roughly 100,000–150,000 VND/day) to reach the further beaches and villages, or simply explore the main village and nearby coves on foot.
The best months are March to September, when the sea is calm and clear – ideal for diving and snorkelling. Outside this window the water can be rough and boat services are often suspended.
As a protected biosphere, the island has limited accommodation. Options include simple homestays (the best way to experience local life), a few small eco-lodges, or you can stay in Hoi An and visit on a day trip.
Cham Island offers a rare mix of nature, history and quiet beaches within easy reach of Hoi An – perfect for travellers who want to escape the crowds. It pairs beautifully with a diving trip: see our diving and sightseeing tour, or have the island built into a tailor-made route.
