Things to Do and See in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is the largest island in Vietnam, lying in the Gulf of Thailand off the country's southwest coast. It's famous for white-sand beaches, turquoise water, a protected national park and world-class sunsets. Over the past decade it has developed fast – you'll find big resorts, cable cars and theme parks – but with a little local knowledge you can still discover its quieter, wilder side. The best beaches on Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is, above all, a beach destination. Long Beach (Bai Truong) is the long, lively west-coast strip lined with resorts, bars and some of the island's best sunsets. Sao Beach (Bai Sao) in the southeast is the postcard star – powder-white sand and calm turquoise water. For a quieter, more natural feel head to Ong Lang or Khem Beach, where rocky coves, clear water and wild vegetation still feel untouched. Phu Quoc National Park and the An Thoi islands

More than half of the island is covered by Phu Quoc National Park – lush tropical forest, streams and rare wildlife, great for a break from the beach. Off the south coast lies the An Thoi archipelago, a cluster of small islands with healthy coral reefs, ideal for snorkelling and diving. A boat trip out here is one of the best ways to experience the island's natural side.

The Hon Thom cable car

One of Phu Quoc's signature experiences is the Hon Thom cable car – a Guinness World Record holder as the longest sea-crossing cable car (nearly 7.9 km). The ride over turquoise water and tiny islands is spectacular in itself, and at the far end you'll find Sun World Hon Thom with the Aquatopia water park, roller coasters and viewpoints.

Theme parks, Grand World and Sunset Town

Families and fun-seekers have plenty of choice. VinWonders Phu Quoc is a huge theme and water park, and the neighbouring Vinpearl Safari is home to thousands of animals. In the south, the Grand World and Sunset Town districts offer canals, the photogenic Kiss Bridge, shows, shops and restaurants. It's polished and man-made – great for some, too built-up for others – so it's worth choosing what fits your style.

Culture, pagodas and history

For a change of pace, visit the island's temples. Ho Quoc Pagoda sits above the sea with sweeping views, while Sung Hung Pagoda is one of the oldest on the island. History lovers should stop at the former Phu Quoc Prison, a sobering reminder of the island's role during the colonial and war eras.

Markets, food and local flavours

Phu Quoc's food scene is a highlight. The Dinh Cau Night Market in Duong Dong is the classic evening spot – charcoal-grilled seafood, coconut ice cream and a lively atmosphere (busiest around 8 pm). By day, Duong Dong Market and the fishing village of Ham Ninh sell fresh crab, mackerel and dried seafood at local prices. Don't leave without trying the island's world-famous fish sauce (nuoc mam), its black pepper, fresh seafood and a taste of local sim wine.

An honest note: Phu Quoc has changed

Let's be honest – Phu Quoc is no longer the sleepy tropical hideaway it once was. Much of the island is now given over to large resorts and attractions, and it has become a byword for package holidays. The rapid growth has also put pressure on the infrastructure: Phu Quoc Airport often struggles with the volume of arrivals, and long queues at passport control are common in the evenings and peak season. A simple way to avoid an hour of waiting after a long flight is the airport Fast Track service. Our honest take: Phu Quoc is beautiful, but if you want the "real" Vietnam, pair it with more authentic, culture-rich destinations rather than travelling all this way only for the man-made attractions.

Best time to visit Phu Quoc

The best time is the dry season, roughly November to April, when the sea is calm and the sunsets are at their best. From May to October it's wetter, though showers are often short. The island is warm year-round, so pack light.

Phu Quoc has its own international airport with direct flights from mainland Vietnam and abroad. Foreign visitors can enter Phu Quoc visa-free for up to 30 days, which makes it an easy add-on to a longer trip.
